Stephanie Hanenberg has been with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs since August 2005. She started as the Student Health Center director and currently serves as the assistant vice chancellor for health and wellness. In that role she provides direct oversight for the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center's campus recreation, mental health, health, nutrition, and wellness promotion services. This model is one of the first in the nation to co-locate all five disciplines into one building. Students have loved the collaboration and integration between all of these areas that aims to provide a holistic approach to overall student wellness. Hanenberg also oversees Disability Services and Testing Center and continues to see patients one day a week as a family nurse practitioner. She previously taught one of our Gateway Program Seminar classes to incoming freshmen for 11 years and served on the American College Health Association board for 7 years, including the role of president. During her time on that board, she was able to bring her passion for what she does on campus to a national level. Some of her favorite areas of practice and advocacy include the LGBTQI community, veteran and military community, mental health issues, and sexual assault prevention and care. She is also extremely passionate about assisting new freshmen with their healthcare as they learn how to manage it on their own, often for the first time.

Hanenberg is also a two-time alum of UCCS’ Beth-El College of Nursing where she earned her undergraduate degree in nursing and her master’s degree in nursing as a family nurse practitioner. Her gratitude for the education she received on campus is what guided her decision to return to campus and provide services that will help other students be successful during their college experience.  

Prior to coming to UCCS, Hanenberg was the sole provider in a clinic within a local high school that also provided treatment to community members. She loved spending time with students that struggled with a variety of issues, which ignited a passion for her to provide services to underserved populations.  Prior to that role she served as the director of nursing at a local private boarding high school for 11 years. Due to the smaller class sizes, Hanenberg was able to interact with every student and connect with them on a personal level. To this day she remains in touch with many of those past students and enjoys watching their successes as adults.   

Hanenberg is a Colorado native so many of her hobbies involve being outdoors. She loves to camp, boat, snowmobile, hike, attend sporting events and concerts, and travel to new and exciting places. All of these activities involve spending time with family and friends, which is the most important thing in her life. She is married to her high school sweetheart and has two amazing children.
